np EcoRack Sustainability Calculator

450 years

It is the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions you’ve prevented from entering the atmosphere.
This saving is primarily due to the switch from energy-intensive plastic (polypropylene/PP) production to lighter cardboard (PAP). This avoids large amounts of CO2 that would otherwise have been released during plastic production. Information Icon The table shows that EcoRacks (Paper/Cardboard - PAP) are used as packaging for the pipette tips, while the calculator traditionally uses plastic packaging (PP) as a basis to calculate the savings.

The main difference in production that leads to CO₂ savings lies in the material composition and the manufacturing process of the rack itself:

CO₂ Savings: Cardboard Packaging (EcoRack) vs. Plastic Packaging (Standard Rack)
The saving of CO₂ emissions (carbon dioxide) results primarily from two factors: the reduction in the amount of plastic and the lower carbon intensity of the paper material.

1. Reduced Plastic Consumption and Production
   • Packaging Material: EcoRacks primarily use cardboard (PAP) and only a small amount of plastic (PP) for the tip holder (as visible in the table under "PAP/PP").
   • Energy-intensive Plastic Production: The manufacture of new plastic (polypropylene - PP) is a highly energy-intensive process. Raw materials are derived from crude oil, and both extraction, polymerization, and shaping release significant amounts of greenhouse gases.
   • Reduced Mass: Since the EcoRack concept saves approximately 60% of plastic weight, you also avoid the CO₂ emissions associated with the production of this avoided plastic weight.

2. Production and Disposal of Paper Material
   • Lower Emission Intensity: The manufacture of cardboard/paper from wood fibers is generally less energy- and emission-intensive per kilogram of material than the production of new plastic.
   • Biogenic Carbon: Wood fibers bind CO₂ from the atmosphere during the tree's growth. A portion of this so-called biogenic carbon is stored in the product.
   • Recycling and Circular Economy: Unlike many plastics, cardboard can be recycled very efficiently, further reducing the need for new material production.
